Excerpts from the Book

“These were the Codes, the Laws of Nature—messages from above and below—from the stars and the sun, the waters and the winds, and all living things on Earth. The Codes wove the tapestry of nature’s DNA—threads dating back to the origins of time.”

We join this story in the moment that the world’s first painting of a horse meets its destiny…

…which is to say that we join an ancient story—a story that travels, like a talisman, through time into the hands of a woman named Sophia Rose.

That painting, on the walls of a cave in France, shows a wild mane, a strong neck, a lean body outlined in black, legs in motion, hooves off the ground.

We view it from a distance of seventeen thousand years, in the moment that a crack in the stone lets a sliver of light seep in.

This light illuminates the crystalline deposits on the walls, layers that have built up for millennia.

This light, sizzling through the crack, lands on the horse’s hoof with a power so intense that sparks ignite like firecrackers, activating a crystal buried underneath.

It leaves the smell of apricots.

What happens next might stun even those who believe in magical realms. The crystal, green as an emerald, dislodges from the rock, ricochets across the cave, and falls to the floor. It twists itself, stretches like hot-blown glass into the shape of a U—a horseshoe that will change the world.

The door swung open to reveal an ageless beauty, otherworldly, with skin like coffee-dipped gold. Maia was awestruck as Sophia stepped onto the porch, barefoot, wearing a flowing dress the color of moss. As she turned, she surrounded them in her ethereal cloud, wisps of hair showing streaks of blue underneath.

"Last summer on a forest walk, Falcon had seen what appeared to be a white horse coming out of the morning mist. When she called out to Diana, all traces of the horse disappeared, except for a golden eagle feather left on the ground."

She stared into her dreamcatcher.

The center stone was clear, with rough, uneven edges, like a found piece of broken glass. Ava knew it was from the earth, all crystals were, but this one had an aliveness to it—a hypnotic power she didn’t understand. If she looked at it long enough, she fell into a trance— a dream state where nothing else mattered and time didn’t exist. She wondered if it were a lost star that had dropped out of the Milky Way.

“Imagination, adventure and hope rests within these pages” —Great-grandmother Mary LyonsOjibwe Elder and Author

They came to the river. Maia picked up a rock and rubbed the smoothness between her fingers. It was an old stone, maybe even ancient. Years of water, perhaps thousands and thousands of days and nights, had washed over the ragged rock, turning it to silk. The stone was in the shape of a circle— and embedded in its center lived a small crystal.

The Dreamcatcher Codes is compassionate, wise, and galvanizing, both a breathtaking adventure and an urgent call-to-action. Not only will Barbara Newman’s terrific debut make you wish you had a magical flying horse, it will also inspire you to do everything you can to save this gorgeous planet we call home.”

“A rich, inspiring tale that reveals the power inherent in young women when they listen to their wild souls, their connection to the natural world and its inhabitants, and to each other. A hopeful vision of cooperation, determination, and what we can become."

Kat Livengood, renowned wild horse photographer

"This book is a work of art. It is also timely and necessary for it calls the inheritors of today's world home to the sacred connection with nature which is their birthright. This book is a homecoming. It is medicine for the soul and it is frankly glorious. Savor it, share it, be touched deeply by it.”
